GENERAL DAILY SCHEDULE… with Disclaimer: The Walker Family Band faculty and staff have learned over the past 14 years to allow plenty of room for fluidity in our week…and this is not a reference to the “Monsoon of 2013″ although fluidity was indeed more necessary than ever that year! We have just come to understand that our camp is not OUR camp but as a different group gathers together each year, it becomes YOUR camp. We really like this effect, so over the years, we have often changed the schedule, perhaps added some stuff, to enhance and tailor the experience to make each camp unique rather than replicate what we do exactly from year to year. The relatively small number of participants gives our camp a truly family feel where everybody can enjoy a week of friendship and relaxation. This intimacy creates an environment that allows us to “get into a rhythm” once we’re on site and provides the opportunity for us to customize each camp week in a way that values the musical interests and social experience  of our group as a whole.  Hopefully, you will like this easy going approach as much as we do!

BRCC GENERAL PRICING – ( see download for 2016 lodging and meal pricing above…additional details below)

BRCC charges a Program Fee or Commuter Fee to participants of our camp. However, week long lodging and meals are then discounted. (See the 2016 Summer Camp page for full details.) Please book lodging and meals with BRCC unless you are participating in one of our special group programs. You can contact them through their website, www.brccenter.org, or give them a call at 828-295-7813.

STUDIO GROUP LODGING
Studio Groups are housed in Rowe Dorm during camp week…a rustic group cabin setting with bunk beds and shared baths. An age appropriate meal package for the week is also included in the studio group pricing….just select the choice that is right for your student. TUITION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE STUDIO GROUP PACKAGE. Because there could be a wide variance of ages and music levels within each studio group, we think it works best to leave the class schedule options flexible. Once the age appropriate lodging and meal package is selected, students…or parents…can choose a class schedule that fits them best. Some more advanced or older students will want the full tuition package offering 4 or 5 classes each day while students with less experience or younger kids may prefer a more relaxed day with only 2 to 3 classes. Of course, chaperones are encouraged to take a class or two or five as well!

DID YOU KNOW…

Would you like  to bring your WHOLE FAMILY to summer camp? It’s a great vacation with plenty of activities for student and adult musicians as well as classes and events for the youngest members of your family and parents who may not play a musical instrument. There is so much to do in and around Blowing Rock if you prefer to shop or enjoy area attractions. If the financial commitment of the Corriher Lodge accommodations feels just a bit out of reach, we invite your family to consider “roughing it” in the rustic cabins of Rowe Dorm.  Whether family group or studio group, there’s plenty of cabins…bunk beds in all…and you can’t beat the rent for a week long vacation at this lovely mountain resort where the joyful sounds of music and laughter fill your days. Each year we have families who camp at nearby campgrounds, but if you prefer a sure dry bed, consider camping at Rowe Dorm and keep those blankets…and instruments…dry! Inquire about the pricing for this option by calling the reservation desk at BRCC.

(STUDIO GROUP FEES INCLUDE LODGING, MEALS, PROGRAM FEE AND A CAMP T-SHIRT)

SOLO STUDENT GROUP (HIGH SCHOOL GROUP)

The package price of $885.00 includes all meals,  lodging at Calvin Lodge, all activities on and off campus, transportation costs to off campus events, and a T-shirt. TUITION IS ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS SPECIAL PACKAGE PRICE. All participants in this group MUST attend a minimum of 4 classes per day, but we encourage our older students to sign up for 5 classes. MANDATORY Classes are the 9:30 principle instrument class and the 3:00 Session.

MEALS

Meals include Breakfast, Lunch , and Dinner daily in the cafeteria, EXCEPT Thursday…Festival Day.

BRCC Cafeteria meals are self serve buffet style with plenty of options at each meal including vegetarian and vegan choices.
PLEASE INFORM BRCC STAFF OF ANY SPECIAL DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS!

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHOOSE MEAL AND LODGING PACKAGES OFFERED BY THE WFB IF YOU PLAN TO PARTICIPANT WITH A STUDIO GROUP OR THE HIGH SCHOOL GROUP! YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PAY ONLINE WITH A CREDIT CARD OR WE WILL BE HAPPY TO ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS BY MAIL.

INDIVIDUAL ADULTS OR FAMILIES WHO PLAN TO STAY IN CORRIHER LODGE OR THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE YOUTH CENTER (ADULT – SINGLES ONLY – EUROPEAN HOSTEL STYLE ACCOMODATIONS) SHOULD BOOK THEIR RESERVATIONS WITH BRCC.

    Scott,

Our family is new in NC, and I heard about your camp through a former student of yours. She took cello from you in high school, I believe. We are VERY interested in attending, but I have a couple questions that I thought would be best answered by “the boss”. We are a family of 5. The violinists in the family are ages almost 7 and 8 1/2, and have been playing for 2 years each. Would there be classes geared for their level? The other “issue” is the 3 year old. I’m guessing that my husband and I could schedule classes and trade off watching her, but I just wasn’t sure if that would be acceptable to the others at camp, or it would be better to wait until she is older.

Thanks for your insight. If we can’t do it this year, we will certainly be there in the future.

PS I was really excited to see someone coming to your camp from the Old Town School in Chicago. That is “home” for us, and we really miss their concerts, etc.

    Greetings Cara,
Your family is perfect for our camp. There are no issues with young siblings of family musicians, in fact some activities are scheduled that will make your 3 year old feel like the older kids are attending HER camp! (There’s a pool and mini golf too!)
The WFB Summer Fiddle Camp class schedule includes instruction levels for beginner fiddlers and guitarists who have only played a year or two…as well as new players who are just starting on a brand new instrument. Although we started as a camp for intermediate to advanced players, enrollment of families over the past 10 years has helped our camp evolve to include levels of musicians from those I mention above to a nice gathering of teachers and performers. All enjoy expert instruction in a fabulous environment of collaboration across all ages and experience.
You can take a look at some of the pictures on our Facebook page to see how the adults and kids form talent show groups together or a group of 10 year olds gets backup from the teenagers in the high school group. It’s really rather amazing!
At camp, it takes only a short time to become friends with everybody…really! We keep our enrollment small for this reason…and it makes our camp a truly unique experience. After a few days, the kids are even calling tunes at the evening jam sessions. It’s so cool to see that happen to a kid for the first time…he calls a tune…plays it through and the older kids and teachers and teenagers start playing it with him…AWESOME!
So, COME TO CAMP! Your whole family is going to have a great vacation!
