Scott Walker

My musical teaching and performing journey has been a long, and to me, quite amazing one! It has been filled with many different situations and a long list of incredible people, students, parents and other teachers! I have taught in public school, private school, and had a private studio.

I’ve been fortunate to have taught cello and “fiddle” at Suzuki workshops all over the country (Alaska, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, even Altamahaw-Ossipee!). I remember my reasons for leaving the orchestra program in Burlington, NC, taking a huge pay cut to teach double duty as music and P.E. teacher at the New Garden Friends School. I wanted to teach the “whole child”, in a place that was dedicated to creating a nurturing and loving environment for the students, parents, and the teachers. I found what I was looking for, and I am still trying to step in that direction!

As I created the Walker Street Fiddlers, and as my family and I created The Walker Family Band Music Workshops, I have taken another, and for me, a more integrated step towards finding a musical teaching environment that has the potential to change people’s lives for the better. It has changed mine, and having these outlets for my teaching and my performing has been an incredible experience!

My renewed purpose is to continue to be a voice among many who seek to teach the art of making “fiddle music”.  In a traditional setting, tunes are generally learned by ear and are shared from one musician to another in a personal way.  While doing so, we spread enjoyment to others (have fun), we encourage healthy relationships (develop community), and we create therapy for ailments large and small (help people to feel better!). I find that as we work to revive this traditional style of teaching and playing, these kinds of experiences are fostered for people with amazing ease and grace.

Peace and Harmony,

Scott Walker

    Dear Scott,

I am a Suzuki cello teacher in the Chicago area. Would you be interested in coming to Chicago this spring to do some workshops with my students ?
We had Abby Newton few years ago and really enjoyed that style. Please let me know if you are interested.

    Thank-you, Lisa

    Hello there Scott,
Greetings from a student from WAY back, from Burlington orchestra days! Although I’m not a professional musician, music still occupies a huge part of my life. Classical lessons off and on over the years, but the last 5-10 years mostly devoted to Scottish and Irish fiddling! Thus finding we have a lot of mutual friends. Would love to attend some of your events, play a few jams. We still live in NC so this can happen. A belated thanks for all the instruction back in the ’70s, what a great foundation for a lifetime!
    Best regards
    Janet McCauley
