Students unfamiliar with the tunes are encouraged and coached to play by ear. Sheet music is provided for music readers. Lots of tunes played in the group jam sessions can be found in Scott Walker’s Irish Tune books.

GENERAL SCHEDULE:

FRIDAYstarting about 4:00 pm, private or small group “Master Class”  opportunities are planned for participants who can arrive before the workshop begins.

Fiddle, Banjo, Cello, or Bass lessons can be scheduled. The registration form (see link above) lists options and provides instructions for signing up!

The Haw River Workshop officially begins after dinner with a Concert by the Walker Family Band Haw River Music Faculty. Once your toes are tapping, everyone will want to join in the folk dance led by Scott Walker. After everyone has become acquainted at the dance, we’ll end the evening with a spirited jam session.

SATURDAY is a busy day of classes and activities. Classes have been scheduled with intention to include musicians of all levels, non-musicians, children and adults.

Parents are required to accompany children ages 9 and younger to their classes. Parents are asked to remain in class with their pre-school aged children.  Children 9 years of age and younger should be met by a parent at the conclusion of each class.

AFTER CLASSES

Classes conclude at 4:30 Saturday afternoon.  Group activities are planned for our participants and their families. You can enjoy a yoga class, canoeing, or a game of  ”Scoccer”, a Scott Walker creation. You are encouraged to  enjoy all the park has to offer during our weekend together. There are trails, and a pond, and the fall colors will call you to wander and explore. Park Rangers are available  on site to help you with canoes and trail guides and provide all the information you need for a relaxing weekend outdoors!

After dinner, some of the teachers will feature class presentations. There will be an all inclusive jam session around the fire. We will bake apples in the fire and sip hot chocolate for an after dinner treat. YUM!

 SUNDAYmorning features three sessions:

9:30: ”Waldorf Circle Activities” for students 9 yrs and younger, led by Linda Minke and Meghan Parrish. This session could include singing, crafts, movement, all in the spirit of Rudolf Steiner.

Also at 9:30, “Camp Radio”, an educational historical “listening tour” of  traditional folk traditions in  America…or who knows where! To enhance everyone’s enjoyment of this musical journey, we respectfully request that participants and guests in this class be at least 10 years old.

10:30:  Scott Walker will lead a Silent Nature Walk to close our weekend at Haw River State Park. Weather permitting, everyone is invited to join Scott for a silent walk through the beautiful woods of the Haw River park. This will be a second “listening” experience on Sunday morning as we tune in to the cacophony  of sound that so often goes unnoticed during the activity of our busy lives. There will be a short meditation along the way, after which, Scott will lead the group in some activities that will bring all of us just a little closer to Mother Earth! A great way to finish the weekend!
