Summer Fiddle Camp – Blowing Rock, NC

The summer of 2016 marks the 14th annual Walker Family Band Music Workshop in Blowing Rock. From the very first camp attended by a dozen or so students, something about the energy, the music, and the families who come together to share this week is always magical. Every year has been the best year! Some of events of camp week are described below. The magic, however, is a “have to be there” experience that The Walker Family Band invites you to discover!

Check In day is a time to greet old friends and welcome new ones. We collect some paper and hand out T-shirts while we catch up on family milestones and see what the kids are about. Lots more visiting continues over dinner till we call a “family meeting”. Scott and Teresja welcome everyone, introduce the faculty, outline the week to come, and answer questions as quickly as possible knowing that everyone is anxious to play some tunes! Sometimes, we announce a special “whole camp” event like our kite making workshop or full camp yoga. We are so jazzed about our 2014 big group event, a camp wide contra dance! Then participants break up into the “new timers” or “old timers” and the first jam session of camp begins. Besides being almost too much fun, the first jam session is a way for faculty members to make sure the class placements are correct for each participant, so long before the players are ready, the faculty calls the jam to a close to make sure our travelers are well rested for  the next days classes.

Early Monday morning, we encourage everyone to join Scott in a silent nature walk…you should be there! The sun streaking through the trees along the path and the meditation rocks inspire and focus us as we begin the day. The daily schedule and special events are posted at the cafeteria and some individual schedules are tweaked. Everyone is excited to begin principle instrument and group music classes and try their hand at pottery or a new instrument elective. After dinner, we meet for jam sessions. It’s hard to leave and go to bed Monday night. Camp is in full swing!

Tuesday and Wednesday we start with a nature walk, all participants will go to classes, Moms and Dads, brothers and sisters, are now enjoying their music and and pottery classes, shopping and hiking , Landon will lead a yoga class before dinner,  kids will go swimming, there will be lots of laughing, jam sessions will be jammin’! New friends have become best friends and camp is in full swing. Family bands and groups newly formed are planning talent show performances for later in the week. Wednesdays are wonderful to watch as the camp has developed an amazing and magical “life” that is as unique as each individual who is present.

By Thursday, in the hallways, on the porch, in the gazebo, everywhere you walk, there is no doubt that the quality of the music has taken a giant step to a higher level! This is the day you notice the musicians are focused on performance. Talent show pieces are being perfected; this afternoon and evening brings our 1st performances and musicians have their game faces on!

In the summer of 2010, the Walker Family Band Music Workshop moved into the community for an  outdoor afternoon / evening festival at Broyhill Park in Blowing Rock. Talent show performances by our camp participants and  guest performances by local artists were featured. There was a catered picnic for our campers and special guests. Our festival day in the park was scheduled to end with the annual WFB Music Workshop Faculty Performance…and after we heard the first few tunes there was no doubt it going to be a great one… when the heavens opened for want seemed like the HUGEST rain EVER! With an auspicious beginning like that one, we decided this is forever an annual event! WE did move the festival back to our BRCC home. We set up outside for the festival and the picnic, but we’re comfortably close to shelter should we have a  repeat of the “Storm of 2010″! Our first annual Camp Wide Contra Dance was a huge success in 2014 so bring your dancing shoes, grab a partner by the hand, and head down to the gym after the picnic for a swinging good time! The Irish Session and Old Time Session musicians will provide the music for the dance. You will really enjoy being there!

Fireday starts early with a canoe / kayak / tubing trip down the New River. We grab a bag breakfast…let us pause in life’s pleasures to give a huge round of applause to Linda and her cafeteria staff for accommodating our special requests all week…we travel to the New River for a gorgeous and peaceful morning of kayaking…well, okay, yes there are squealing youth among us! We will return happy and hungry just in time for lunch complete with entertainment provided by more participant talent show performances…have to be there! After a morning on the river, we go to afternoon classes, get back into our rhythm at yoga class and share our river stories over a fabulous dinner together.  The pottery firings happen after dinner followed by a jam session around the bonfire…not without s’mores and sparklers…we do have our camp during 4th of July week!

Saturday is high energy for the last day of classes and fine tuning for the grand finale concert. Friends and family arrive throughout the day. Last minute shopping strategies are executed. There’s even more than usual running and squeeling. The pool is a popular place. There are small groups of students gathered in comfortable places and beautiful places and unusual places playing and planning…you really just have to be there! After the concert, we hug and say goodbye and hug and say goodbye some more. Then the wild night people do what they do till the last person is silent.

Sunday is one of those luxurious mornings to linger over breakfast until we can postpone the inevitable no longer. We gather the items that were missed and the friends who can remain meet late in the morning outside in the sanctuary for a time of silence and gratitude…we hope you can be there.

Hey! No, I’m behind a bit from working on the winter workshop…FABULOUS!…but I’ll have something over the weekend. We’re changing the format to something we think will be really inclusive and more affordable for more people, so I’m working on that along with a new brochure. I’ll send you an email with details SOON!

    Best to everybody!

Please see our 2013 Summer Camp page to read about all the fun activities and performance opportunities in between! I will also be adding links to the Information page in the next few days. You will be able to down load printable copies of the schedule, playing level guidelines and other camp specific information soon.
We hope to see you in Blowing Rock this summer!

Hi, some of the classes sound really fun to try – do you by chance have trial instruments? For example, my guitar daughter would bring her guitar, but she’d be interested in trying mandolin

    Thanks
